Coverage is a system studios use to give a brief overview of a script, generally focussing on what is wrong with the work. It is typically a 1 or 2 page summary along with specific ratings of key items such as plot, structure, dialog, concept and marketability. Scripts get rated with either:
• "Pass", which means they need a lot of work or they are simply not very marketable.
• "Consider" which means the script has promise, but needs to be revised before further consideration.
• "Recommend" which is the highly coveted ranking that might help a script get read by the agents, producers and other key industry players. Even recommended scripts have flaws though and, more often than not, can be improved.
At Scene 51 Script Doctor Services, we use studio-style coverage as a guideline to help screenwriters assess how their script might be received before the writer sends their script out to producers and agents.
